Moving on from the East End of his Cockney childhood, Terence Stamp now goes West. Having won a scholarship to the Webber Douglas Academy â€" where Penelope Keith and Samantha Eggar are also starting out â€" Stamp is spotted ‘playing half of Iago’ by his future agent, James Fraser. Terence lands his first professional role in Willis Hall’s The Long and the Short and the Tall for the princely salary of £12 a fortnight â€" a theatrical experience made even more eventful by the antics of an irrepressible blond lead called Michael Caine. Stamp and Caine are sharing a mews house, as well as the same suit for auditions, when Terence gets his big break: Peter Ustinov wants Stamp to test for the title role in his film Billy Budd.
